It was late May, and spring decided to head into hibernation early. Heat and humidity were invading much of the U.S. as an estimated 26 million marched against police brutality in the wake of George Floyd's murder. As their hope dwindled, help came from an unexpected place.
Chef and nutritionist Rasheeda McCallum's home delivery service was put on hold during the pandemic. However, that didn't stop her from taking her talents to the streets. After feeding countless protesters during the BLM movement, McCallum created The Black Chef Movement to help provide for hungry Black communities.
A group of Philadelphia-based chefs saw the food insecurity plaguing the Black Philly community. Together, they created Everybody Eats with the goal of fighting food insecurity in their community.
Over 29% of Black households battle food insecurity every day as of 2022. As right-wing pundits dismantle already weak systems that provide some help, it's Black chefs that are stepping up to the plate.
Our community is strongest when it's fed and unified. These incredible and inspiring chefs have banded together in spirit and mission to do the work for our people. They are setting the bar for what can be achieved when we take our skills and work together to improve the lives of every Black person around us.
