The COVID-19 pandemic has not been kind to Black women. “In December 2020 alone,” reports Black Enterprise, “Black women lost 154,000 jobs. Today, one in six Black women are unemployed.”
The reality is something significant has to be done. And that’s where Google’s stepping in.
The tech giant just unveiled its Grow With Google partnership to help make sure Black women “grow their careers and businesses…[by] learn[ing] the skills they need to succeed in an increasingly digital economy.”
But just where will these women come from?
Google is partnering with six reputable organizations in the community, including four National Panhellenic sororities, The Links, and Dress For Success, to attract candidates who could benefit from the opportunity.
While this seems like a hand up, Google is wisely tapping into a pool of Black Girl Magic.
After all, despite how the pandemic is crushing the job market, Black women are still overrepresented in college student bodies and as entrepreneurs.
What it really boils down to is Black women want to excel, and Google and other companies thriving in the digital economy stand to benefit from Black women’s passionate resolve to rise above the current state of affairs – just like we always do!
