Over a thousand Kellogg’s workers are on strike. The multi-billion dollar company tried to negotiate with an insulting offer, but the workers aren’t interested.
Perhaps because the demands they’re making seem like common sense!
Workers are fighting over the company’s policies – both new and old. Kellogg’s recently implemented a two-tier system that separates newer employees from veterans, for example – newer workers make less money and pay more for health care. Also, the company axed retirement benefits, vacation pay, and holiday pay.
But Kellogg’s is refusing to give in and pay fairly or provide adequate benefits.
Instead, the company’s planning to just fire everyone and hire replacements – also known as “strikebreakers” or “scabs.”
This will cost them MORE in the long run – it’s very expensive to hire and train an entirely new workforce. But punishing workers for demanding better is more important to them than being reasonable.
Luckily, the workers have allies on their side: thousands of supporters are creating “fake” applications to crash Kellogg’s hiring website in solidarity!
Kellogg’s actions show clearly that our system is built on workers believing that we can’t change things or ask for what we deserve.
Kellogg’s can afford to treat workers better – in fact, it would be cheaper to do so. But they’re fighting it, because punishing workers for demanding respect is more important!
