Several states will begin cutting unemployment checks starting June 12, affecting at least 4 million Americans. Though millions of people were depending on these benefits, the government cut the funds three months EARLY! Is your state one of them?
25 states are pulling out of the unemployment program. Missouri, Alaska, Iowa, and Mississippi – the poorest state in the nation – are the first states to stop unemployment benefits. This will greatly hurt its citizens, especially Black Americans.
These programs were crucial lifelines for the millions of people who lost jobs during the pandemic – and while unemployment numbers are coming down, withdrawing from the program early leaves millions still vulnerable.
Unemployment benefits made it possible for people to pay bills, avoid homelessness, care for their children, and/or minimize their health risks in the midst of a global pandemic. This move will have serious repercussions.
Considering many people were paid more on unemployment than at their jobs, cutting benefits won’t help revitalize the economy, only further devastate American citizens.
Check your benefits and those of your folks to see if you’re affected. And remember we always need to look for ways to support and take care of each other – because the system will always cut us off at the earliest opportunity.
