Setting clear boundaries is important in all of our relationships – especially when it comes to money. These tips will help you learn to say “no” to peer pressure or obligation, so you can say “yes” to the things that matter!
#1: Avoiding Guilt
Getting a dinner invite when you’re already over-budget is a recipe for disaster. Saying no is tough, but setting a clear boundary – like dedicating only one night a week to eating out with friends – can help you decline without feeling guilty.
#2: Presents
Gift giving is supposed to be about love – not stress! This holiday, set out in advance who you will be getting gifts for and how much in total you’ll spend. You can spend quality time with, or make something homemade for, anyone else.
#3: Borrowing Money
You should NEVER lend money you can’t afford to lose forever. But even better, deciding in advance whether and how much you will ever be willing to lend out. Never? Only to immediate family? Only up to a certain dollar amount? Set it in advance, write it down, and stay firm!
Setting boundaries can be hard, but it actually helps us in the long run to take care of our finances – and keeps both our wallets happy and our relationships drama-free!
