Sheila Hammon’s white coworkers constantly made racist jokes in the break room. The culture of “professionalism” was toxic. She wanted to work from home, but had no idea where to start! Little did she know, she had LOTS of options.
Like Sheila, too many of us have experienced racism, microaggressions, and toxicity in the workplace. Working from home, also called “remote” work, often helps! So why do so few of us work remotely?
At the beginning of the pandemic, public health officials urged people to stay inside and work from home. But, only 20% of Black workers were able to do so!
Many of us don’t work in industries that are suited for remote work. But even for those with remote jobs, trouble looms.
Some companies, which offered remote work because of the pandemic, are rushing to send their employees back to offices, despite the risks – or the fact that most Black employees report being MUCH happier in remote positions.
A lack of racism, no commute, and more flexibility with childcare are top reasons why.
Some Black workers don’t know remote work is a realistic option. But there ARE remote positions that don’t require a college degree or years of experience!
For example: data entry analysts, freelance or copywriters, bookkeepers, and executive assistants are all options that can be remote and are more accessible.
Our economic system has consistently made it very difficult for us to thrive. It's rare for us to be able to work in spaces free of discrimation – and those of us that do, are at risk of it being taken away!
