As the pandemic drags on and, in many states, hits its most intense level yet, the safest thing any family can do is stay home. Online shopping and delivery services are the safest bet when we need groceries and other items – but your favorite local Black-owned business might not be online, right when it needs your support the most!
Some conscious entrepreneurs have figured out a creative way to solve the problem.
Rhandi and Jonathan Altidor started The Better Buggy to bridge the gap between conscious, but safety-minded Black consumers and Black-owned businesses.
“[A] lot of the major outlets that offer [grocery delivery] don’t have smaller Black-owned businesses available,” says Rhandi. Now Atlanta can get delivery of groceries and other needs without worrying about COVID-19 transmission out at the store. They’re not the only ones making moves in this space, either.
Twin brothers Aaron and David Cabello launched Black And Mobile in 2019 to expand delivery of Black-owned restaurants to Philadelphia. Since the pandemic started, they’ve experienced massive growth and have expanded to Detroit and Atlanta as well.
Black consumers and entrepreneurs will always have to get creative to thrive financially while also supporting our community. Mainstream apps and services will never prioritize us – we’ve got to do it ourselves!
