Disenchanted with the usual means of combating the injustices of systemic racism – fiery protest, passionate prayer, two-party voting – realtor Ashley Scott decided there was another way. But would it work?

She and her friend, investor Renee Walters, took an uncommon route. They discovered an investment opportunity Toomsboro, Georgia, where an incredible 96.71 acres was available for purchase.

With the group investment of 19 Black families, their ancestors’ wildest dreams began to take shape – the land was theirs!

“[T]his is how we change our communities and build real Black power,” she explained. “We figured we could try to fix a broken system or we could start fresh. Start a city that could be a shining example of being the change you want to see. And … create some generational wealth for ourselves by investing in the land.”

Unsurprisingly, The Freedom Georgia Initiative - Scott’s cohort of families - aren’t the only ones pooling resources together in order to pull off massive moves like this.

Another couple purchased a 53-acre ranch for their family to get into the inheritance game!

For many, this kind of purchasing power and asset accumulation would be next to impossible – if done alone. But the families that make up the FGI are proving that collective hard work pays off!
