There are unused plots of land all over many of our neighborhoods. If you can get your hands on one, a vacant lot holds a world of potential if you’re creative about its use! Here are some ideas to help you get started.
Plant a Community Garden
According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), whether your vacant lot is in an industrial city or a green natural space, hosting a community garden is one way to “offer physical and mental health benefits [to be enjoyed by participating laborers] by providing opportunities to eat healthy fresh fruits and vegetables, engage in physical activity, skill building, and creating green space, [and to help] beautify vacant lots.”
Be sure to secure proper permission from your local government first, but the return is worth your investment.
Supply Outdoor Advertising
Real estate investor Seth Williams recommends that “if you own a property that is zoned commercial and in range of a well-traveled road … it could be a great candidate for outdoor advertising!” Connect with local Black-owned businesses that could use the extra marketing help and you both can win.
Open A Park
Similar to community gardens, parks are not only beneficial to the wellbeing of others but also help other developed properties in their vicinity appreciate in value. If you’re considering developing a residential building, also consider adapting some of the land for recreational use.
Develop Residential Space or Parking
Tiny or mobile homes, campers, and recreational vehicles all need land to park on. Consider repurposing your lot to accommodate the increasing demand for this kind of land use!
