We have a long, complex relationship with farming, but countless Black people have started growing vegetables in recent years – both because it’s good for our health AND because we can save tons of money!
And it’s not only for those of us in the country. Ready to start a backyard, rooftop, or indoor garden? Here’s how.
#1: Location
What do you want to grow, and how much light does it need? Especially in the city, you need to figure out where you get adequate sunlight – most veggies need nearly 6 hours a day. A sun lamp can supplement, though, if you don’t get enough!
#2: Seeds Or Starts?
If you have the experience or a helper, starting from seeds is cheaper and you can get a wider variety of things growing! Otherwise, your local Lowe’s or other garden center should have vegetable starts that are planted and ready.
#3: What to grow?
It really depends on your local climate! Soil hardiness and weather affect what can grow. But there are some pretty easy veggies that grow almost anywhere – tomatoes, squash, lettuce, peppers, and carrots, to name a few!
You can save money, eat healthier, connect to our ancestors, and build community by growing your own vegetables. There’s never been a better time to get your garden started!
