Pan-Africanism seeks to promote solidarity among people of African descent worldwide. It advocates for the unification of the African continent, the elimination of colonialism, and the establishment of a global governing body for all of us. However, this movement has economic implications, too.
Establishing trade across the continent would have a massive effect on global financial markets. Sadly, most of the trade on the continent is with Europe and Asia. However, as the desire to unify grows more potent, so do the calls for change.
Rwanda, for instance, recently signed $10 million agreements to increase continent-specific trade. The economic and political move should inspire Black Americans to take up similar actions and continue to support Black businesses.
While the actions of African nations may seem far away and unrelated, the diaspora ties us together. This connection to Africa can be a powerful way to strengthen our collective bonds as well as our economic futures.
