Black folks are always on high alert for opportunities to win financially. But many schemes are just too good to be true. Protect your identity, money, and other personal information by wisening up to these evil scams.

Scam 1: A Job Offer

Job scammers know that folks are desperate for any employment leads. They find your personal information, contact you with a fake offer and check to “cover expenses,” and “all you have to do” is share your bank account information, wire money back, or send gift cards. Don’t fall for it!

Reality check: real job offers NEVER require a bank transaction or ask you to pay up front!

Scam 2: COVID-19 Vaccines or Medical Equipment

These scammers prey on the fears of sick populations. The plot starts with an email advertising a COVID-19 vaccine or medical equipment in exchange for credit card information. But real drug or equipment distributions DON’T require pre-payment or advertise this way!

Scam 3: Phishing Emails

According to AARP.org, some scammers pose as a trusted brand such as an Amazon representative. “You'll be told a package can't be delivered until you ‘confirm’ your credit card number,” warns reporter Bethany McIean. Never click on any links in the email. Instead verify directly on the company’s website.

Bottom line: if an offer came out of nowhere and sounds too good to be true, remain skeptical: it probably is! NEVER blindly offer your bank or credit card information, social security number, Medicare number, or agree to purchase gift cards as payment. It’s a trap!
