Former Atlanta Falcons running back Warrick Dunn founded a charity with a powerful mission: donating fully-furnished homes to single parent families. His legacy will forever go beyond the playing field.
Dunn was raised by a single mother who dreamed of owning her own home – but died before she could. To honor her dream and memory, Dunn created a charity that helped some of the most disadvantaged members of the Black community – single parents.
Being a single parent can be hard for anyone, but in our community we experience several barriers, such as dehumanizing stigmas and income inequalities that are made worse by having only one working parent.
This makes it even more difficult to give our children or even ourselves stable home lives. But Black philanthropists like Dunn are taking matters into their own hands.
Dunn made millions during his sports career, and he’s using his money and connections to help people in need. Being rich means nothing if you aren’t giving back – and having access to money and the power to make change is a great privilege that should be used to help the less fortunate.
It’s so important that we have strong pillars in our community we can depend on. Dunn is a great example of using resources available to you to give back to your community.
