The cost of prescription drugs has been increasing for years. And during the COVID-19 pandemic, it’s gotten especially bad! Unfortunately, the money we’re surviving on hasn’t increased much.
And the problem seems to be getting worse.
Nearly half of Americans either skip refills or don’t take their medication at all because it’s too expensive!
In 2022, drugmakers are continuing to raise prices of hundreds of prescription drugs, including HIV, heart and cancer medicines. The average cost increase is 6.6%.
Health insurance companies cover some of the costs for prescription drugs – but it’s rarely enough, and there are loopholes. Often, if you’re below your deductible amount, you could pay full price for meds! Some plans offer “co-pays” or “co-insurance” that could still add up to hundreds of dollars every month.
And that’s if you can even afford health insurance.
The average family of four pays about $25,000 annually for their healthcare plan. But many of us just can’t afford this! Most U.S. states don’t require residents to have health insurance anymore – meaning people go without.
Without coverage, people pay out of pocket. These growing costs are putting Americans at risk.
Our economic and health care systems continue to prioritize profits over public safety. Live saving medication should not only be accessible to the wealthy!
