Poverty disproportionately affects Black people, and while overall rates have declined, the intersectionality of race, sexuality, and poverty creates a unique set of challenges for Black LGBTQ+ individuals, including economic disparities, discrimination, and systemic barriers.
Black LGBT+ people are at a higher risk of experiencing discrimination, harassment, violence, and homelessness. These challenges often make securing employment, housing, healthcare, and education difficult, perpetuating the cycle of poverty and exclusion.
To address poverty in the Black community, policies that promote economic equity need to be a priority. Moreover, policymakers should support initiatives that explicitly address the unique challenges faced by Black LGBT+ individuals, such as reducing discrimination in the workplace and ensuring equal access to credit and financial services.
Centering Black voices in poverty advocacy efforts is essential in addressing the unique needs and challenges faced by the Black LGBTQ+ community.
By engaging with our voices and experiences for increased political and public policy actions, we can build a more just and equitable society where all individuals have access to the resources they need to thrive.
