Black women have the highest breast cancer death rate. We frequently struggle with trusting doctors and often get tested too late – and it's costing us everything. Cancer treatments can be insanely expensive – even more than you’d think due to the hidden expenses of breast cancer treatment.
#1: Insurance
Many of us choose the cheapest insurance option we can – with the hope we’ll never get seriously ill. But not having proper insurance not only affects the quality of the care we receive, but can cost us a lot of money in the long run.
#2: Uninsured expenses
Wigs, head bandages, or hats are often necessary for breast cancer survivors – but aren't usually covered by insurance. Some medications, as well as mastectomy clothing or other necessities, also might not be covered.
# 3: Transportation
Getting treatment might mean regular trips to the hospital for at least six months – if it was caught early. Transportation challenges affect cancer patients' ability to prioritize their health and can add significant costs.
#4: Emergency fund
Treatment can be unpredictable. But taking unexpected time off of work can mean eating into your savings or emergency fund. Preventative measures, catching breast cancer early, and being prepared could mean the difference between a diagnosis that is a challenge – and one that’s impossible to overcome.
