The Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity has announced its plans to move its 2025 convention from Orlando, Florida. The fraternity’s decision is a reaction to racially prejudiced policies put into place by Governor Ron DeSantis.
The financial incentive of hosting an Alpha convention is significant. The convention normally attracts between 4,000 and 6,000 attendees, amounting to $4.6 million in revenue.
The decision to leave Florida means the state will lose that revenue. The fraternity’s withdrawal comes in response to legislative changes in Florida’s school curriculum in regards to Black history teachings.
Earlier in the year, the NAACP and other civil rights organizations issued a travel advisory for Black people visiting Florida. Alpha Phi Alpha’s decision is the most recent move as the state comes under fire for its educational policies, including DeSantis’ mandate that students be taught that enslavement taught Black people valuable skills.
